Eric Cahan has worked for several years as an editorial photographer, and his commercial work has been published in Vogue Nippon, Elle Décor, Glamour, and House and Garden. His fine art photography, characterized by an unfailing attention to color and detail, pushes the viewer to be present and connected with their natural surroundings, resulting in a sort of photographic nature walk.
Cahan's most recent series of photographs is entitled Color Theory: Sky. Influenced by the work of Agnes Martin, James Turrell, and Mark Rothko, these photographic abstractions are created by an intricate and painstaking process. In each photograph, Cahan captures both the dramatic and subtle changes of light at sunrise and sunset, and heightens the color saturation with the use of multiple cameras and filters. Similarly, the chromium printing of each photograph involves an obsessive attention to detail. Cahan will reprint the image as many times as necessary until the final rendering is seamless, without striations or blemishes. The result is something beyond technical description, evoking the emotion and presence of nature at its most sublime. As described by the artist: "The pictures I make only exist on the paper surface. I try to capture an unseen or rarely witnessed element in nature, hoping to lift the spirit and empower the viewer. I want the viewer to be drawn into this world, and be, for a time, completely absorbed in rather than separate from the image."

In the 1970s, he received considerable recognition as editor of Interview Magazine. He went on to author the highly praised, Ronnie and Nancy: Their Path to the White House, 1911-1980 and a memoir of Andy Warhol in the '70s and early '80s, Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up, which was critiqued by the New York Times, as the “best-written and the most killingly observed” book on the subject. In this exhibition, Mr. Colacello exhibits a rare series of vintage photographic prints from his most recent publication, OUT, which capture the happening late '70's and early '80s art and social scene.

“The capabilities of modern technology are vast, and, I feel, it can provide us with a new vision, a new insight, and a new way of looking at a familiar subject. The beauty of the world that surrounds us is not so much in the modern world, but more in the one that has been lost because of our complacency; our refusal to recognize it’s majesty."
- Daniel Fuller
“The Lost World” is an exhibition of nine photographs from Daniel Fuller’s Moonscape Series.
The Lost World exhibition examines the planet we inhabit- a world that increasingly exists of opposing forces. Mankinds attempt to capture the rudiments of these forces in a more meaningful and positive manner is the challenge he faces - be it through correcting global warming or environmental policy that honors nature. While technology has been an instrument of beneficial change, all to often, it has been one of ultimate destruction as well. Nature, in contrast, remains a constant; a rich tradition linking our past to our future. The Lost World urges us to respect and care for the beautiful world we all call home.

Daniel Fuller was born in 1982 in Hanalei, Kauai. He spent his early years surfing the heavy Pacific waves of the Hawaiian Islands, becoming the extreme waterman he is today. At the age of 17, while traveling the world as a model and renowned professional surfer, he began to take advantage of his new experiences and the beauty that surrounded him by documenting the different cultures, peoples and landscapes he encountered.
Fuller soon began to experiment more seriously with the art of photography; taking hundreds of photos, trying different cameras, and getting advice from the professionals that he was working with. He was influenced by various photographers, including the great Ansel Adams and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The evolution of Fuller’s craft was a natural and organic process for him. He compares the development of his photography to his surfing, in that each photograph is composed of elements of nature and the only way to truly improve is through trial and error.
Two years ago, in the backyard of his house in Hawaii, Fuller took in the beauty of an incredible full moon illuminating the Pacific Ocean. The vision evoked in him a deep curiosity and the determination to preserve it. That night, he photographed a single frame. Later, seeing the proof sheet, Fuller understood the possibilities. It was the catalyst of The Lost World.

Lisa de Kooning, who studied at the Lacoste School of the Arts, will be showing her
whimsical bronze sculptures. Ever immersed in art and surrounded by her
father's great works, Lisa inherited a love and understanding of art that she
has developed into an adept and expressive hand. Her magnetic and capturing
sculptures range from the 1980s to her most recent works, made specifically for
this show. This is Ms. De Kooning’s debut exhibition in New York City.
Jake U. Patterson, born in Sag Harbor, NY, educated in California, New Zealand, Bali, and NY, has traveled extensively and experienced cultures that have influenced his artistic vision.
Before graduating high school, Jake co-starred in a production at Bay Street Theater, where his rendition of a young Iraqi teen was most impressive. He was Student Council President, was inducted into the National Honor Society, and maintained honor roll grades. He played Varsity basketball and was the anchor on his All–League Varsity track team.
Jake designed a T-shirt line in 2007, Edgewood Goodies, that was presented at a trunk show in East Hampton and sold out. A Dan’s Papers review, acclaimed Jake as “one of the youngest new designers on the East End.”
Jake exhibited at the Parish Art Museum and the Southampton Cultural Center, where he received an Honorable Mention award for a self portrait oil on denim. Concurrently, five other oils of the series were exhibited at Bridgehampton Historical Society. Klaus Kertess invited Jake to participate in The Annual Hamptons Show at the Springs Fireplace Project. An East Hampton Star review quoted Mr. Kertess: “[Jake] was in the show [Historical Society] with…self-portraits that were really boldly and beautifully painted for someone that young,” Jake’s work has been well received, with six write-ups including photographs, and an interview on WLIU radio. He has sold work and has been privately commissioned.
Jake recently began his BFA at School of Visual Arts, NYC, and made the Dean’s List. He is transferring to California Institute of the Arts in September 2009.
Matisse Patterson was born in Munich, Germany, on August 1st, 1987. She spent her first two years in Europe before returning to the USA where she attended kindergarten at the Hampton Day School in Bridgehampton, NY. When she was a tiny girl she started surfing while the family was vacationing in Bali, Indonesia, and started competing in the USA at the age of eight years. Her family moved to Bali for two years in 1997, where she home schooled and continued surfing. After returning stateside for a couple of years, she attended the Ross School and Bridgehampton School. She competed in Surfing, Tennis and Track. Her family moved abroad again a few years later — this time to New Zealand. There she attended high school, studied art, surfed and played basketball. Matisse graduated from Bridgehampton High School with the highest average and achieved All League and MVP awards for basketball, a Bay Street Young Playwrights award for a play she wrote and directed, a Southampton Cultural Center Painting award and a Parish Art Museum Honorable Mention for her portfolio work. With scholarship award money she attended Student Art Centers International in Florence, Italy before being accepted at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. This May, Matisse has graduated from SVA with honors. She is currently preparing for her first solo exhibition entitled, Danger Deep Water, May 27th - June 27th, 2011.

John Ross Rist (Rhode Island School of Design, BFA, 2006) appears in this, his New York City debut showing. In 1997, at 15, Mr. Rist won the US Holocaust Memorial National Art Contest with his first ever painting, which now still remains on display at the Washington DC Holocaust Museum. Now 27, John unveils his latest body of work. His "splatter heads" revisit renaissance classics while shedding light on the darker side. Bravely, John successfully combines old classical styles with modern action painting techniques; something so many contemporary artists try to achieve.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I am drawn to coloration and geometry as well as folksy attitudes towards lifestyles and social mores. This photo project exemplifies elements that are important in all my artwork, and especially the paintings and sculptures that play on my interest in geometric designs in a a faux-naive folk context that references the arts and crafts movements of the 1970's. Using industrial materials like rope and plywood demostrates my desire to participate in a building process that subverts the intended uses for the materials. I hope to dematerialize these industrial materials and make them into cerebral elements -patterns- in my work, the same process that stands behind the photographs in this show.

Don't be deceived by the name, the anti-gallery Get Real Art actually does have real art and it's hanging in the basement. The current gem-of-a-show in the Project Room downstairs features Nick Weber, a local artist trained on both coasts. This is Weber's first solo show in New York, and it is worth catching before it closes this week. Weber carves figures out of blackness, illuminating his nocturnal narratives with night lights - a solitary car bathed in lamp light, a shadowy figure of a girl lit by her cigarette and a couple exposed by a bed-side lamp, to name just a few. Weber's most obvious influences include Rembrandt and Munch and there may even be a California abstract expressionist in him somewhere. It seems a natural and logical reference as he studied with Nathan Oliveira and is familiar with the work of other California painters like Richard Diebenkorn and David Park. All in all, this intimate show is a rare find.

In this exhibition, the second solo show by painter Nick Weber, Weber displays his mastery of light, color and texture in single portraits and group scenes. Painting in oil on canvas, he captures subtle gradations of light and skillfully renders his figures in a manner that seems nonchalant and uncalculated. Weber's work is also full of subtext, exploring issues dealing with class, sexual politics and the fragility of male self-esteem. Clearly influenced by Rembrandt and Munch, Weber's art is a welcome sight in today's art scene. Give yourself a present and check out this show before it closes. (MB)

Parents blast gallery featuring porn paintings near school

A Lower East Side gallery is giving schoolchildren too much of an arts education.
"Porno Paintings," a series of sexually explicit canvases inspired by scenes from Internet pornography, is visible to anyone walking by the Windows Gallery on Orchard Street -- and parents are fuming.
"I definitely disapprove of this being on display near my daughter's school," said Elvin Almonte, 33, whose 5-year-old girl attends neighboring PS 42.
"I don't want to have to be answering questions in reference to those dirty paintings. It sickens me that little kids could see that right there through those windows," he said.
Owner Dino Eli (above) of the Windows Gallery on the Lower East Side defends displaying paintings inspired by porn.
The threesomes, fetishes and other hardcore visuals -- the work of Hamptons artist Nick Weber -- prompted complaints by officials and parents at PS 42, as well as a visit by the police, since the show went up several weeks ago, owner Dino Eli said.
"The police officer said that the schools and the church nearby complained," he said. "The paintings have been up for two weeks, and this is the third time the cops came."
An NYPD spokesman said he wasn't aware of any complaints.
According to one PS 42 teacher, the principal did lodge a complaint "but was told nothing could be done. It's horrible."
Another teacher, William Garley, 34, said the gallery should remove the paintings from street view.
"That's pretty disgusting. Our kids walk by there," he said. "Our children shouldn't see something like that."
Defending the work, and the placement of the paintings, artist Weber said children are exposed "to much worse."
"They're afraid it's going to corrupt the kids, when kids can watch people getting shot on TV," he said.
Although oil is often used in pornography, it isn't usually the type that winds up on a canvas, Weber said.
"It's art," he said. "I started doing them because I was conflicted about how something that is bad could be beautiful. They are not photographs -- they take about six months to paint."
Parents disagree
"That's not art; that's just porn," Joanna Morillo, 28, said. "When little kids see that, they will ask questions. That shouldn't be out here."
Paintings of a man sucking on someone else's foot, or a threesome being a watched by another man, are no longer smut, the gallery owner said.
"Porn is the norm," he said.

Cocktail Table
Oxidized Sapele and Glass 20”H x 62”w x 32”D
$7,200
Sweeping Sapele curves dance under the glass top. Sapele is a cousin of the Mahogany tree and in this case it has been oxidized to bring out the deep dark color.
The clear glass top provides a very functional surface and allows the interplay of the curves to be viewed from every angle.
